In 2016, Galway Community Circus began the ABCirk Youth Leadership Scheme for members ages 16-20 to develop leadership skills and competencies in circus pedagogy. The aim of the programme is for youth members to train in the art of Social Circus teaching.
Also in 2016, five youth leaders became assistant tutors for younger groups at Galway Community Circus, took part in tutor training and worked with partner European circus schools CIRQUEON (CZ), Cirkus LeGrando (CZ) and Cirkus in Beweging (BL) to develop methodologies for the wider sector to adapt youth leadership schemes within their organisations.
Our youth circus members have annual opportunities in international youth exchanges allowing them to gain new skills and become part of an active, close-knit network of like-minded youth circus students from across Europe.
The learning process, methods and games were documented in videos taken by the young participants and shared online here.
The second phase of the project has received Erasmus+ funding and will run from 2019-2022 led by CIRQUEON.
