Building Global Connections Through Circus
At Galway Community Circus, we are committed to strengthening our ties with European and international partners, believing that these connections enhance our growth as an organisation. Our partnerships provide us with invaluable opportunities to learn from best practices, access professional development, and offer international opportunities for our members. They allow us to bring skilled artists and students to Galway through long-term residencies and EU programmes, fostering a dynamic environment where circus practitioners can thrive.
Engaging with European Networks
We actively engage with key national and international networks to both share our work and learn from the wider circus sector. As a member of CircusWorks UK, we are also part of EYCO (European Youth Circus Organisation), where we contribute to the development of the sector on a European scale.
In 2024, we hosted the EYCO General Assembly in Galway, an event focused on strategic planning for the future of the organisation. Our Executive Director, Lynn Carroll, who serves as the President of EYCO, played a leading role in guiding discussions and setting the direction for the network’s next steps.
As members of FEDEC (Federation of European Circus Schools), we continue to develop relationships with international professional circus education organisations. In 2024, Lynn spoke at the FEDEC Annual Spring Talks in Salzburg.
Exploring Circus Safety and Leadership
This year, Lynn also contributed to the international dialogue on circus safety by speaking at the conference Circus - a Safe(r) Space for Danger in Antwerp. Over three days, 146 participants explored the critical issues surrounding technical, psychosocial, and physical safety for circus professionals. The event featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and workshops designed to promote best practices in circus safety.
In June, Lynn and our Development Coordinator Maeve attended the Leadership in Circus Conference in Riga, Latvia. This conference brought together circus professionals and leaders from across Europe to share insights and discuss the future of circus leadership. It was a powerful opportunity to connect with colleagues and explore ways to strengthen the leadership capacity within the circus sector.
Collaborative Projects and Networking
As active members of the Caravan Circus Network, we continue to participate in and support youth and social circus initiatives across Europe and beyond. Caravan, an international network of circus schools from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, advocates for the positive impact of circus as a tool for social change. This year we continued our role as board members, as well as participated in the Caravan General Assembly in Barcelona, where we collaborated on projects aimed at providing access and opportunities for Irish artists and organisations.
Erasmus+ - European Solidarity Corps
One of the most rewarding aspects of our international partnerships is the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), which enables young people to volunteer and contribute to projects that benefit communities. In 2024, we welcomed 8 volunteers from Italy, France, Germany, and Belgium, who joined our circus team and supported various initiatives. The ESC programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to engage in cultural exchange, enhance their skills, and contribute to community-focused projects across Europe.
Through these international partnerships, we not only contribute to the global circus community but also continue to bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and vital resources to our local community in Galway. We look forward to strengthening these connections and expanding our international collaborations in the years ahead.
