Summer Circus partnership with New Horizon Athlone

We had a great time in August hosting circus workshops with Direct Provision and refugee youth in Athlone!

Back in August, we partnered with New Horizon Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support and Gateway Youth Project to deliver a four-day circus skills workshop for young people in Direct Provision and Ukrainian refugee youth living in Athlone. The workshops were in preparation for Fleadh Day where community workshops and a performance took place in our big top tent.

The young people involved learned leadership skills, teamwork, and circus skills including balance, stilt walking, plate spinning, acrobatics, hula hoop and more, which they were able to teach to their peers. We had such a great week seeing young people come together to experience the joy of circus and make new friends and lasting memories.

Our partnership with New Horizon developed last year when we held our Sunday Circus programme, which was designed to support young people from migrant backgrounds to meet other young people living in Galway and make new friends, in the frame of a fun and inclusive activity such as circus. Many of the young people who were involved in the Sunday Circus programme last year returned to participate in this year’s workshops, having expressed interest in improving their circus skills.

If you are looking to develop a unique, fun and inclusive programme featuring circus, contact us at socialcircus@galwaycircus.com. We're always looking for meaningful partnerships with others in our community. Learn more about our community programmes here.
