Galway Young Artists Collective: Emerging Artists, Big Ambitions
The Galway Young Artists Collective (GYAC) is a unique and inspiring space for young people aged 12–17 who are dedicated to their craft and ready to take their circus journey to the next level. Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, GYAC supports emerging artists who are eager to push boundaries, explore contemporary circus as an art form and gain experience that prepares them for future study or careers in the performing arts.
In 2025, GYAC brought together six exceptionally dedicated young artists. From February to April, they trained together every Wednesday and Sunday, building skills, developing ensemble trust and exploring the creative process from both a technical and artistic perspective. Their commitment, curiosity and courage shaped a new piece of contemporary circus theatre.
Creative Training & Artistic Development
GYAC gives young people the chance to train like professionals. Participants take part in:
- Bespoke, goal-focused skills development
- Professional-style rehearsals and show creation
- Direction and mentorship from leading circus and performance artists
- Participation in workshops with international experts
- Behind-the-scenes learning at major institutions
This year’s programme strengthened both technical skill and artistic identity, encouraging members to build their creative voice, take bold risks and collaborate deeply as a collective.
Their 2025 Premiere at Mayhem Youth Circus Festival
After months of training and devising, the Collective premiered their brand-new performance during the 2025 Mayhem Youth Circus Festival.
Directed by guest artist Angelica Santander, the piece blended circus, movement, theatre and clowning, showcasing the young artists’ advanced skills and their thoughtful, contemporary approach to performance-making.
For many, it was their first experience working within a professionally structured creation process - from early improvisation and theme exploration to refining choreography, staging and ensemble work.
January London Trip - Training, Inspiration & Big Dreams
A highlight of early 2025 was the Collective’s trip to London, where they:
- Toured the National Centre for Circus Arts
- Tried flying trapeze at Aircraft Circus Academy
- Took part in workshops and discussions with professional circus artists
- Enjoyed an unforgettable night seeing Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo at the Royal Albert Hall
This trip expanded their horizons, sparked new inspiration and offered a glimpse into the world of professional circus training.
Connections Across Europe
Alongside their training and performance work, GYAC members took part in European youth exchanges and collaborations throughout the year, including cultural exchanges in Slovenia and Ireland, and workshops led by visiting international artists.
These experiences broadened their artistic perspectives and helped them form meaningful connections with young circus-makers from across Europe.
