Life Skills through Circus

The Galway Community Circus have linked up with St. Joseph’s Special School to devise an innovative circus skills course for 15- to 18-year-old students. Ten senior students from St. Joseph’s Special School will participate in a ten-week course designed to build social interaction, enhance self-esteem and encourage physical development through a variety of exciting, fun and challenging activities.

The students will work on five key areas over the ten weeks: balance, manipulation, acrobatics, aerial skills and performance skills. They are very excited and are already planning an end-of-course performance to show what they are learning!

The course will be assessed and evaluated by St. Joseph’s staff and Galway Community Circus tutors and any necessary additions or changes will be implemented. Ten new St. Joseph’s students will participate in a follow-up course starting in October 2016. After this the Life Skills Through Circus course will be ready to roll out to other schools across the country.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Pobal, who are the funders behind this project, without whom it would not be possible.
